Wawrinka Upsets Djokovic to Win French Open

Stan the Man was on his game today in Paris, as he upset top-seed Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to win his first career French Open at Roland Garros and second career major championship (2014 Australian). Using a powerful serve and blistering backhand, Wawrinka won the second and third sets after losing a hard fought first set.

In the final set, he lost the first 3 games but rallied to break Djokovic twice, winning the next three to be back on serve. Showing obvious nerves, though, he goes down three break points to Djokovic at 4-3 before rallying to win five straight points and stay on serve at 4-4. From there, Wawrinka breaks Djokovic one more time and serves out to deny Djokovic his career grand slam at Roland Garros, where he has now finished runner-up three times.

"I'm really happy to have won it. I'm sure he's [Djokovic] going to get in one day because he's such a strong player," Wawrinka said afterward.
