2010: The Year in Sports
NFL
Behind MVP quarterback Drew Brees and Tracy Porter's game clinching interception (below), the Saints boost up New Orleans and beat the Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV.
College Football
Heisman trophy winner Cam Newton leads undefeated #1 Auburn to BCS Championship Game, as they will play #2 Oregon and LaMichael James in Glendale on January 10. Boise State was looking to jump into title miss, but suffered a heartbreaking loss to Nevada in overtime, while undefeated TCU misses out because of it's soft schedule. Still no playoff.
MLB
It was the year of the pitcher, six no-hitters were thrown (Ubaldo Jimenez, Dallas Braden, Edwin Jackson, Matt Garza, Roy Halladay X 2) including two (should have been 3, Armando Gallaraga) perfect games (Halladay, Braden). In the end, the San Francisco Giants rode their pitching and clutch hitting to win their first World Series since moving to the Bay Area, beating the Texas Rangers in five games.
NBA
The Celtics and Lakers played another epic 7-game NBA Final, with Kobe and LA winning the title for the second straight year. In the world championships, Kevin Durant led team USA to a gold medal. But the story of year was the most active free agency period in NBA history, with LeBron James making his decision to sign with the Heat, joining Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade to make an instant title contender in Miami.
College Basketball
It was another great NCAA tournament, with Duke and cinderella Butler playing a classic championship game. (final 2 minutes of game below)
Hockey
The Chicago Blackhawks won their first Stanley Cup since 1961, but the play of the year had to be Sidney Crosby's golden goal for team Canada (below) in the Vancouver Olympics. It came in sudden death overtime after the United States had tied it with 24 seconds to go in regulation with a goal from Zach Parise.
Soccer
Colorado Rapids won their first ever MLS Cup, but the biggest story was the World Cup obviously. Landon Donovan rescued U.S. with an epic goal against Algeria in stoppage time to send the U.S. to the knockout stage, but in the end, it was Spain which reigned supreme, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final (highlights below)
Golf
It was a wild year in golf. Tiger Woods goes winless for the season, while the relative four different countries were represented as major champions: Martin Kaymer (Germany), Louis Oosthuizen (South Africa), Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland), Phil Mickelson (United States).
Tennis
Rafael Nadal returned from a tough 2009 and dominated, winning Wimbledon, the French Open, and the U.S. Open, while John Isner and Nicolas Mahut played the longest tennis match in history (11 hours, 5 min)
NASCAR
Jimmie Johnson won his fifth straight Sprint Cup title, in the closest Chase ever.

Merry Christmas 2010!
Bulls @ Knicks 12 PM ET on ESPN
Nothing better to kick off a great slate of action than with D-Rose against Amare at the Garden.
Celtics @ Magic 2:30 PM ET on ABC
It's an Eastern Conference showdown in Orlando, with Dwight and his new look team against the powerhouse Celtics.
Heat @ Lakers 5 PM ET on ABC
LeBron vs. Kobe in Hollywood. The New Big 3 against the two-time defending champs. Not to mention the fact that this is a potential NBA Finals preview and Miami is red-hot after a rough start. You have NO excuse not to watch this.
Nuggets @ Thunder 8 PM ET on ESPN
Should be shootout from OKC, as Durant, Westbrook get first Christmas day game against Denver.
Trailblazers @ Warriors 10:30 PM ET on ESPN
LaMarcus Aldridge and banged up Blazers in Oakland to take on Ellis, Curry, Lee and high-flying Warriors.
Cowboys @ Cardinals 7:30 PM ET on NFL Network
No playoff implications in this game, just old fashion play-for-pride game. The Cardinals have been terrible this year without Kurt Warner, while Cowboys have played better since the firing of Wade Phillips. DeMarcus Ware and the Dallas D should dominate the punch-less Cards' offense and 'Boys should dispose of Arizona easily.

Magic Remake Roster
Wow, blockbuster in the NBA today involving the Orlando Magic.
In the first of two trades, the Orlando Magic acquired guard Gilbert Arenas (above) from the Washington Wizards in exchange for forward Rashard Lewis. I like this trade for the Wizards as they officially hand the reigns of their team to rookie John Wall now, and get an outstanding outside shooter, which they lacked. For Orlando, although Lewis was under performing, and Arenas should play well with Dwight Howard, this leaves Jameer Nelson, an all-star caliber guard, as the odd man out.
In the second trade, the Magic get Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu, and Earl Clark from the Phoenix Suns for Vince Carter, Mikael Pietrus, Marcin Gortat, and a 2011 1st round pick. I like this deal much better, as Turkoglu led Orlando to NBA Finals in 2008 and Richardson is having a great season, upgrading the SG position from an under performing Vince Carter. For Phoenix, it will be interesting to see how well Carter fits in with Steve Nash and their fast-moving offense. Gortat should also add size down low, while Pietrus gives an above average perimeter defender.
All in all, the Magic did get better talent wise with their deals today, as Lewis and Carter both failed to live up to expectations in their time there. However, Orlando's perimeter defense should be horrible now, as Arenas, Richardson, and Turkoglu play little to no D.

Yao Ming
After undergoing an MRI today in Houston, it was discovered that Yao had suffered another stress fracture, this time to his left ankle. This comes after Yao missed all of last year with a broken left foot due to a stress fracture. He had looked to comeback this season, but lasted just five games before going out with what was originally diagnosed as a sprain. That was upgraded to a bone bruise a week later, before today's devastating news came out.
For Yao, who has always been a class act and has been the ambassador of the NBA as it has gone global to China and around the world, it has been a bittersweet career. Expected to be the heir to Moses Malone and Hakeem Olajuwon and continue the line of dominant Houston centers and lead a championship-starved city back to prominence, Yao played nearly four injury-free seasons before getting ravaged by injuries, causing him to miss all or parts of every year from 2005-2010. In total, Yao made seven all-star teams, and has career averages of 19 points, 9 rebounds, and nearly 2 blocks. Perhaps his finest moment occurred when he refused to come out of a game because of an injury in Game 1 of the 2009 Western Conference Semifinal series against the Lakers and helped the Rockets to victory. Other playoff appearances included first round losses to the Lakers in 2004, Mavericks in 2005, and Jazz in 2007. (He missed 2008 series against Jazz)
Below is a video tribute to a man that worked so hard to try to comeback for both his team and his country (whom he represented at the 2008 Olympics). He deserved better, but in the end, his 7-6, 310 lb frame just couldn't hold up.

Cliff Lee Picks Phillies
In an absolute stunner, last night, Cliff Lee, the most sought after free agent this offseason, decided to return to the Phillies. Although the Texas Rangers, who he helped pitch into the World Series last year, and the New York Yankees offered him more money (as much as $150 million), Lee turned them down to return to Philadelphia, where he pitched at the end of the 2009 season. The deal is reported to be 5 year, $120 million, and Lee will join Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels in what will be the best rotation in baseball. This is a complete shock to me, but in a way, it gives me a smile to know that the Yankees were foiled in both their attempts to purchase high-end free agents this year (the other being Carl Crawford)

Happy Thanksgiving 2010!
Here are my Thanksgiving football picks:
Patriots @ Lions 12:30 PM ET on CBS
The Lions are playing inspired football, and have been in almost every game this year, but just have had problems closing. They are much better team than in year's past, but New England comes into the game as impressive as ever, with wins in back-to-back wins over Pittsburgh and Indy and I don't think they'll be stopped today.
Saints @ Cowboys 4:15 PM ET on FOX
Best NFL game of day, as Dallas is 2-0 under Garrett and seemingly more disciplined with Jon Kitna having settled down as solid fill-in for Tony Romo. However, the defending champs from New Orleans are rolling, and Drew Brees and co. should have big day against Dallas secondary.
Bengals @ Jets 8:20 PM ET on NFL Network
Playoff rematch from last season, so looked good on paper when they scheduled it. Too bad that's not how things have turned out. Bengals are a mess, losers of 7 straight, including a horrible one last week to awful Buffalo at home. Jets meanwhile look like one of teams to beat in AFC this year, with a great defense and great QB play from Mark Sanchez. This one might be over by halftime for the home side.
#17 Texas A&M @ Texas 8 PM ET on ESPN
Aggies are hottest team in Big 12 right now, as they have won five straight since Ryan Tannehil has become the starting QB. A&M's defense has also been impressive in their run. For Texas, it's been a season to forget, as they need to win this game just to become bowl eligible. Garrett Gilbert and the UT offense has struggled to get into groove, while the great defense has looked vulnerable at times. It should be close since it's in Austin, but Aggs are better team.
My Thanksgiving Picks:

2010 MLS Cup Final Preview
American soccer's championship will be determined Sunday night in Toronto, at the 2010 MLS Cup Final, with FC Dallas taking on the Colorado Rapids at 7:30 PM CT on ESPN.
Dallas, which upset the LA Galaxy in the Western Conference Championship last week, is led by league MVP David Ferreira, and is in its first ever MLS Cup Final. Colorado, meanwhile which is in its second ever final, advanced out of Eastern Conference bracket after beating Columbus and San Jose. They are led by strikers Conor Casey and Omar Cummings, who are great on counterattack. They key to the game will be whether Colorado can contain Ferreira and Dallas' wideplay, and hit them on a counterattack. In the goal, Dallas' Kevin Hartman was outstanding in their win over LA, so Colorado's Matt Pickens must match his play. Weather may also play a factor, as it will be in 30's, extremely cold for a team that played its regular season games in 90 degree weather in Dallas.

Giants Win World Series
For a team that was largely put together in the middle of the season, the San Francisco Giants emerged as 2010 World Series Champions. The first championship for the Giants since 1954 and first since moving to San Francisco came behind dominant pitching of Tim Lincecum in a 3-1 Game 5 victory over the Texas Rangers in Arlington. World Series MVP Edgar Renteria, who hit .412 with 2 HR, 6 RBI in series, provided all the offense San Fran needed with a 3-run home run in the 7th inning, the second championship clinching hit of his career (1997 with Marlins).
A true underdog, fielding many players that were cut from other teams before and during the season (Aubrey Huff, Freddy Sanchez, Renteria, Cody Ross), the Giants used timely hitting and their outstanding pitching to clinch all three postseason series on the road.
For the Rangers, an amazing season comes to an end three wins shy of a title. The only major league franchise to never win a postseason series coming into the season, the Rangers upset both the Rays and Yankees to reach their first Fall Classic. However, just as the Astros did in 2005, their bats went silent in the end, and they had to watch their opponents celebrate on their field.

2010 World Series Prediction
Here's why:
This should truly be a tossup series. The Rangers shocked both the Rays and Yankees in the AL, beating them with outstanding pitching and timely hitting. Cliff Lee has been automatic for the Rangers at top of rotation, while CJ Wilson and Colby Lewis have followed with similar good performances of their own. The Rangers' lineup is superior to the Giants, with likely MVP Josh Hamilton, Vlad Guerrero, and Nelson Cruz providing firepower. Meanwhile, the Giants come off an NLCS where they stunned the Phillies with pitching, pitching, pitching. Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, and Madison Bumgarner are all elite, and closer Brian Wilson and his beard has been awesome at the end of all of the one-run games San Fran has played. While without the firepower of the Rangers, the Giants lineup, led by Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey, has gotten timely hitting from NLCS MVP Cody Ross and Juan Uribe. It will come down to pitching, and timely hitting, and the way these Giants have played in so many of these one run games, it should give them an edge. Also watch for home field of AT&T Park to play role, as balls take crazy bounces off right-field wall (see 07 All-Star game), and without DH, Texas may have to play Vlad Guerrero there.
Giants in 7.

2010-11 NBA Preview
Western Conference
1. Los Angeles Lakers- Back to back defending champs add feisty Matt Barnes and guard Steve Blake. They also hope to get a full, healthy season from Andrew Bynum.
2. Dallas Mavericks- Early playoff exit last year will motivate Dirk, Kidd, and Terry to make run in West again. Full season of Caron Butler and adding Tyson Chandler to Haywood at center makes Dallas deep.
3. Portland Trailblazers- Oden and Pryzbilla return from injuries, and join Marcus Camby and Aldridge in front court, while backcourt of Roy and Miller is solid. Health is key #1.
4. Oklahoma City Thunder- Rising team, took LA to 6 in round one last year. Durant is leading MVP candidate to start season, Westbrook looks to become all-star, while Jeff Green, James Harden will try to take next step to help OKC become West contenders.
5. Houston Rockets- Yao is back and depth of team is tremendous, with Courtney Lee, Patrick Patterson, and Brad Miller added to an already winning team, with Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola emerging stars.
6. Utah Jazz- Losing Boozer and adding Al Jefferson is actually a gain for Jazz, which will expand role of Paul Millsap. Still need depth in backcourt to pair with Deron Williams.
7. San Antonio Spurs- Aging team found life in playoffs, reaching the second round before being run off the floor by Phoenix. DeJuan Blair, George Hill, and import Tiago Splitter add youth to core of Ginobili, Parker, Duncan.
8. Denver Nuggets- To trade Carmelo? Or not to trade Carmelo? That is the question. As far as on the court, Denver adds swingman Al Harrington to help weak front line.
9. Phoenix Suns- Losing Amare leaves Suns without low post threat, but Turkoglu should add perimeter play-making in addition to Steve Nash.
10. New Orleans Hornets- CP3's team cut payroll in offseason, and also made
11. Los Angeles Clippers- Griffin is back and seemingly healthy, and pieces are there for playoff team, but it's the Clippers. They'll screw up some way. They always do.
12. Memphis Grizzlies- Real nice season last year for Memphis, but point guard situation has yet to be resolved, as well as bench depth.
13. Sacramento Kings- Potential sleeper team in West, lot of young, growing players.
14. Golden State Warriors- Lee, Curry combo should be great in years to come, but for now, more growing pains with new coach.
15. Minnesota Timberwolves- Giving Darko that kind of money was ridiculous and Beasley is an over-paid ballhog.
Eastern Conference
1. Boston Celtics- Defending East champs sign two old, injury-prone O'Neals to replace injured Perkins.
2. Miami Heat- LeBron, D-Wade, CB4. Let's see how it comes together.
3. Orlando Magic- Let's see if Dwight has learned anything from working out with Dream in offseason.
4. Atlanta Hawks- Overpaid Joe Johnson and have new coach, but still have talent to make it in the weak East.
5. Chicago Bulls- After recovering from injury, Boozer should be great front-court addition for Rose and co.
6. Milwaukee Bucks- Biggest surprise last season and adding veteran Maggette to Jennings/Bogut gives Bucks chance at central division title.
7. Charlotte Bobcats- Brown's team got offensive boost from Stephen Jackson mid-season. Still no depth at center or point guard.
8. New Jersey Nets- My ultimate sleeper makes jump from worst to playoff spot. Murphy helps Lopez on front line as they bring along Favors, while Harris looks to have bounce-back year.
9. New York Knicks- Amare is no LeBron, but gives Knicks first low-post presence for first time in years. Felton is also nice addition at PG
10. Philadelphia 76ers- Pieces are there for new coach Doug Collins, but too many questions in the front court.
11. Indiana Pacers- Really loved the Darren Collison pickup, gives Pacers a great complement to Granger. Front court improvement of Hansborough and Hibbert will show how far Indiana can go.
12. Detroit Pistons- Gordon/Villanueva failed to live up to contracts, and adding T-Mac to 27-win team won't help much.
13. Washington Wizards- John Wall will have growing pains, especially with little forward talent.
14. Cleveland Cavaliers- No LeBron drops Mo Williams' team to doormat in central.
15. Toronto Raptors- Complete rebuilding mode for Toronto without Bosh. Maybe worst front court in league.

2010 LCS Picks
This should be an offensive slugfest of a series. Both ballparks are among most hitter-friendly in the league and the two offenses are great. It will come down to each side's pitching. Although the Rangers have the best pitcher in the series in Cliff Lee, the Yankees' trio of CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes, and Andy Pettitte is overall stronger than Lee, C.J. Wilson, and Colby Lewis. If it is close in the ninth inning, it'll be interesting to see if rookie Neftali Feliz can be as effective as the Yanks' all-time great closer. I'll be rooting for my in-state Rangers, but I'll lean New York.

NLCS
Completely opposite to the ALCS, the NLCS should be a pitcher's duel. Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay are the top two pitchers in the game, and lead their respective staffs. Behind Lincecum, the Giants throw Jonathan Sanchez, Matt Cain, and Madison Bumgarner while the Phillies hurl Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, and Joe Blanton, giving them a slight advantage in the rotations. The Giants lineup is much improved, with LF Pat Burrel and C Buster Posey leading the charge against the Braves. However, the Phillies are playoff tested, and with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in the middle of a power-hitting lineup, San Francisco's magical run will end.

2010 NLDS and ALDS Picks
Reds vs. Phillies
I have loved the Reds all season, but this matchup is brutal. Phillies' rotation is loaded with Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels, and they also have the playoff experience to take out the inexperienced Reds.
in 4
Braves vs. Giants
Both teams clinched berth on last day of season, but the Giants are the hotter team, having had to catch and surpass the Padres in the NL West. Both teams' starting pitching is exceptional, but the loss of Chipper Jones and Martin Prado gives the edge offensively to Buster Posey and the Giants.
in 5.
American League
Rangers vs. Rays
Both teams cruised into the postseason, having realistically guaranteed playoff berths early, so they haven't been playing at their best for the last month. When it comes down to it, we'll see which team steps up. The Rangers lineup is loaded, but will its lack of playoff experience be able to shine against the Rays' rotation of David Price, Matt Garza, and James Shields? I don't think so.
in 4.
Yankees vs. Twins
This will the most intriguing series, in my opinion and can almost go either way. Target Field will host its first playoff games, although weather should not be an issue. Yankees' rotation isn't as strong as last year's, but still slighty better than Twins' rotation with CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte having edge over Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano. Offensively, Twins have done well to absorb loss of 1B Justin Morneau. DH Jim Thome has been excellent for Twins, but Bronx Bombers' lineup boosting four players with 25+ homeruns may be too strong.

My 2010 MLB Awards
AL MVP: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers (.328, 28 HR, 126 RBI)
The race for this award has been wide open the whole season. You could easily give it to Josh Hamilton of the Rangers or José Bautista or the Blue Jays too. I opted for Cabrera because he does not have as much help around him in the lineup as Hamilton, and has way higher batting average than Bautista. It is also notable that since he has gone down with injury for the season, the Tigers have lost five straight.
NL MVP: Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies (.336, 34 HR, 117 RBI)
Done for the season with injury, CarGo won't win the triple crown. But what a season it will have been for the breakout star in Denver. Playing with relentless abandon, Gonzalez has been complete player, running into outfield walls to make catches many times this year. The critics that say he is a product of Coors Field are inaccurate. His home/road splits in batting average are nearly identical, and Joey Votto plays in a smaller park than Gonzalez. Honorable mention goes to Albert Pujols, but I think it is time for a new NL MVP.
AL Cy Young: Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (13-12, 2.27 ERA, 232 K)
The record doesn't look great, but keep in mind, Hernandez pitched for the last-place Mariners, who had one of the worst offenses in the whole league. King Felix, the AL leader in inning pitched, ERA, and strikeouts, also has a .54 ERA against the Yankees and Red Sox.
NL Cy Young: Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (21-10, 2.44 ERA, 219 K)
Doc has had awesome first season in Philly, leading the league in wins, inning pitched, and strikeouts. Add the perfect game he threw in Miami and Halladay should be the 5th player ever to win Cy Young in both leagues.
AL Rookie of Year: Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers (39/42 SV, .89 WHIP, 71 K)
A huge part of the Rangers' success this year has been the stability at the closer position by the 22-year old Dominican. His 39 saves is third in the league and his .177 batting average is also second in the league among closers.
NL Co-Rookies of Year: Buster Posey, San Francisco Giants (.309, 17 HR, 66 RBI)
Posey has been a savior for the Giants down the stretch run, infusing a weak offensive lineup with some power since his callup in late May. In addition to playing the toughest position in baseball in catcher and having to learn all the pitchers and play solid defense, Posey has hit almost matched Braves' outfielder Jason Heyward in homeruns and RBI in about 30 less games. Cardinals' pitcher Jaime Garcia also gets mention for his great year, but it's all about Posey.

My 2010 AFC South Preview
1. Indianapolis Colts
2009 Record: 14-2
Projected 2010 Record: 11-5
The Offense
The Super Bowl runner-up’s offense should be dominant as usual this season, with QB Peyton Manning coming off his fourth MVP season. Already a great receiving core should get stronger this year, as WR Anthony Gonzalez, who was hurt for almost all of 2009, should bolster a group that already includes All-Pro Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon, as well as TE Dallas Clark. The offensive line returns intact and should be solid. The only weakness on Indy’s offense is their running game, which ranked last in the league in 2009.
The Defense
The 18th ranked defense from last year returns intact. DEs Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are the best combo in the league and adding first-round pick Jerry Hughes from TCU should only help. The linebacking core of MLB Gary Brackett, and OLBs Clint Session and Philip Wheeler returns whole. The strong secondary hopes to get a full healthy season from SS Bob Sanders, while FS Antoine Bethea, and CB Jerraud Powers and Kelvin Hayden should be solid.
The Key
The running game. The Colts won 14 games despite being 32nd in rushing last year. Joseph Addai and Donald Brown must give the offense some balance for the Colts to get back to the Super Bowl.
2. Houston Texans
2009 Record: 9-7
Projected 2010 Record: 9-7
The Offense
The Texans’ offense emerged last season as one of the best in the league, despite having virtually no running game. QB Matt Schaub led the NFL in passing yards last year, and should direct a high-octane attack again this year, with All-Pro WR Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, and potential sleeper Jacoby Jones. TE Owen Daniels was on his way to All-Pro status too last year before he tore his ACL. His health could be key in adding another downfield threat for Schaub. Arian Foster will start the season as the #1 RB, as Steve Slaton still has not solved his fumbling problem from last season. The o-line, led by RT Eric Winston, is solid, not great, and need to improve in short-yardage situation.
The Defense
Houston’s defense finally took the step from being mediocre to at least competent last year, finishing ranked 13th overall. LB Brian Cushing and SS Bernard Pollard added much needed toughness for the unit last year, helping LB DeMeco Ryans and DE Mario Williams be more effective. The loss of Cushing for the first four games due to suspension will hurt, as LB Xavier Adibi must step up in his absence. The weakness of this defense will be the secondary. Franchise corner Dunta Robinson is gone, and in his place, rookie first round-pick Kareem Jackson will have to learn on the fly and be effective to prevent big plays.
The Key
The play of the secondary. While the safeties are solid veterans, the cornerbacks on this team are very young, and for the Texans to make the playoffs for the first time ever, Jackson, Glover Quin, and Brice McCain will have to play very well. In addition, the Texans need to improve their record against divisional opponents, as they were just 1-5 within the AFC South last year.
3. Tennessee Titans
2009 Record: 8-8
Projected 2010 Record: 8-8
The Offense
What a year it was for RB Chris Johnson, who gained over 2000 yards on the ground, last year. He was the one constant on an offense that went through a quarterback change in the middle of the season again. Out is Kerry Collins, and in is Vince Young, who played fairly well down the stretch for Tennessee last year, as they finished 8-2 after a 0-6 start. The passing game is still suspect at times, but WR Kenny Britt is on the rise after a good rookie season, and veterans Nate Washington and Justin Gage are professionals.
The Defense
A big reason this team won five less games last year was the play of the defense. The Titans never seemed to overcome the losses of DT Albert Haynesworth and coordinator Jim Schwartz, and did not start the season well. It will be interesting to see how they overcome losing veterans Keith Bulluck and Kyle Vanden Bosch this year. In the secondary, Tennessee is solid, although they gave up way too many big plays in the passing game early in the season
The Key
The passing game. The Titans have a tough schedule and to improve on last year’s results, Vince Young needs to be more consistent in getting the ball to the WR core.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars
2009 Record: 7-9
Projected 2010 Record: 5-11
The Offense
The Jaguars offense, much like the Titans, depends on the running game. Maurice Jones-Drew was fourth in the NFL in total rushing yards last year, and carried a unit that was mediocre at best last year. A lot of that has to deal with QB David Garrard, who has not matched his career-best year of 2008, in the two seasons since. A lot of that has to deal with his lack of play making receivers down the field, but with WR Mike Sims-Walker emerging as the #1 last year, Garrard must be more efficient in 2010.
The Defense
This rebuilt defense will try to improve on the 23rd ranked status they earned last year. The turnover for this unit has been extensive since their playoff team in 2008, and its new leaders are linebackers Daryl Smith and Justin Durant. Jacksonville’s pass-rush was dreadful last year, so the team added veteran DE Aaron Kampman and rookie Tyson Alualu. How they come together as a unit will determine how much success they will have on pressuring opposing quarterbacks. Finally, starting cornerbacks Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox are good, but the Jags must get improved safety play from Reggie Nelson and company to shore up the back, which ranked 27th against the pass last year.
The Key
The improvement of the defense. Whether or not the Jaguars can stay in the playoff hunt will depend on their ability to rush the passer and be solid in the secondary.

Bradley Gets Extension
Announced late last night, USA Soccer announced that it was retaining head coach Bob Bradley for another four year cycle and for 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Bradley, who led the USA out of the group stage in this year's World Cup before the team fell to Ghana in the Round of 16, was not expected to return as coach, as many thought that international coach Jurgen Klinsmann might get the job. To me, this shows the faith the U.S. national team have in Bradley to continue to build on this year's success. However, his roster decisions before and during the World Cup (leaving off Brian Ching for Hercules Gomez/Edson Buddle, neither of whom played well, reinserting Ricardo Clark into midfield for Ghana game, etc) made me want to start anew.

Martin Kaymer Wins PGA Championship in Playoff
At the season's final major at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, Martin Kaymer of Germany emerged as winner of the 92nd PGA Championship, edging Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff.
Kaymer, who won his first major title, made a 15-foot par putt on the 72nd hole to tie Watson for the clubhouse lead at 11-under par, forcing the playoff.
American Dustin Johnson looked to join the pair as he birdied #17. However, his drive on #18 went well right of the fairway into a crowd of spectators. Not knowing that he was in a bunker that people had been walking in all week, Johnson ground his club into the sand before hitting his second shot into the rough behind the 18th green, eventually bogeying the hole and forcing what seemed like a three-man playoff. However, the PGA enforced a two-shot penalty on Johnson for the grounding, causing him to fall back to 9-under in a tie for fifth place.
In the playoff, Watson birdied the first hole at #10, while Kaymer answered with a birdie at #17. On the third playoff hole at 18, Watson's second shot was well short of green and fell into Seven Mile Creek. From there, Kaymar just needed bogey for the win and he calmly tapped in from two feet.
"I don't realize what happened," Kaymer said. "I just won my first major. I've got goose bumps just talking about it." Kaymer's win also moves him up to #5 in the world golf rankings and earned him $1.35 million.

Rockets Trade Ariza to Hornets
For the Rockets, this trade is a salary dump for a team that was over the cap because of their recent signing of center Brad Miller and re-signings of forward Luis Scola and guard Kyle Lowry. In total, Houston will save $10 million in salary and luxury tax for Ariza, but do lose his perimeter defending on a team that was one of the worst in the NBA in overall defense last year. Lee averaged 12.5 PPG for the Nets last season.
For the Hornets, this is a head-scratcher as Collison (12.4 PPG, 5.4 APG) was one of the top rookie point guards in the league last year after filling in for the injured Chris Paul. Ariza, who averaged a career 14.9 PPG for Houston last season, however, does fill a need at SF for New Orleans, and strengthens their commitment to Paul long term.
The Pacers finally get the point guard they have needed for a long time in Collison, while the Nets get a veteran big man in Murphy (14.6 PPG, 10.2 RPG) to help the front line in New Jersey.

A-Rod Hits #600
Today at the new Yankee Stadium, Alex Rodriguez became the seventh player in major league baseball history to hit 600 career homeruns. Of the seven, Rodriguez is the youngest ever to reach that milestone, at 35 years and 8 days (Babe Ruth 36 yrs, 196 days). A-Rod took Blue Jays starter Shawn Marcum deep in the first inning 417 feet into Monument Park in centerfield. Of course this is a great accomplishment for one of the best hitters in this generation, but to me, the stain of A-Rod's steroid use will forever stain whatever accolades and awards he has and will win in his career.

2010 MLB Trade Deadline Central
The Astros finally traded their ace, Roy Oswalt, to Philadelphia in exchange for lefty J.A. Happ, and prospects Jonathan Villar and Anthony Gose. The Astros then promptly sent Gose to Toronto for first base prospect Brett Wallace. Oswalt (6-12, 3.42 ERA) joins a Phillies rotation that already includes Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels and gives the defending NL champs a boost in their NL East race with the Atlanta Braves. For the Astros, this was the right move to make as it seems as it will finally jump start the rebuilding process that they have long needed to begin. Happ, who finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting last season, is coming off a forearm injury earlier this season, but should be integral in the Astros' rebuilding. Wallace, the 27th ranked prospect by Baseball America coming into this year, should eventually replace the aging Lance Berkman at first base.
Rangers Get Cantu
The Texas Rangers have acquired infielder Jorge Cantu from the Florida Marlins in exchange for minor league pitchers Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. Cantu fills a hole for the Rangers at first base, and may also play a little second base because all-star Ian Kinsler just got put on the DL.
Yankees Acquire Berkman
The Astros continued their rebuilding by trading franchise first baseman Lance Berkman to the New York Yankees in exchange for prospect minor league pitcher Mark Melancon and infielder Jimmy Paredes. Berkman, who is Astros' all-time leader in on-base percentage and slugging percentage, heads to New York and should be an option at first base and as DH as the Yankees chase their 28th championship this October.
Padres Trade for Tejada
The San Diego Padres have acquired veteran infielder Miguel Tejada from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for AA pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Tejada (.269, 7 HR, 39 RBI) adds offense to a light-hitting Padre lineup as they push toward the playoffs.
Twins Acquire Capps
The Minnesota Twins have acquired all-star closer Matt Capps from the Washington Nationals in exchange for catching prospect Wilson Ramos and pitcher Joe Testa. Capps (3-3, 2.74 ERA, 26 saves) will take over the closer's role for the Twins, who have been without Joe Nathan for the season because of Tommy John surgery, have used setup man Jon Rauch at closer so far this season, and while he has pitched well, Capps has better stuff and should be a better fit for the Twins in the AL Central race.
Dodgers Acquire Lilly
The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired lefty pitcher Ted Lilly and shortstop Ryan Theriot from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for second baseman Blake Dewitt and minor league right-handers Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach. Lilly (3-8, 3.69 ERA) will join the Dodgers' rotation as their fifth starter as L.A. tries to make a playoff push.
Cardinals Land Westbrook
St. Louis bolstered its starting rotation today by acquiring pitcher Jake Westbrook from the Cleveland Indians. The three team day sent outfielder Ryan Ludwick from St. Louis to San Diego. The Cards also get minor leaguer southpaw Nick Greenwood from San Diego, while the Indians get AA pitcher Corey Kluber from San Diego. Westbrook should fit in to the back of the Cardinal rotation which Jeff Suppan struggling.
White Sox Get Jackson
The Chicago White Sox have traded for righty Edwin Jackson from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league pitchers Daniel Hudson and David Holmberg. Jackson, who recently threw a no hitter for Arizona, fills a hole in the rotation left by Jake Peavy, who has gone down with an injury.
Dodgers Add Dotel
Los Angeles adds reliever Octavio Dotel from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for pitcher James McDonald and minor league outfielder Andrew Lambo. Dotel, who was closer for Pirates, should add depth to an already strong Dodger 'pen.
Yankees Acquire Wood
New York adds bullpen help by getting Kerry Wood from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a player to be named. Wood, 33, was 1-4 with 6.30 ERA in relief for Indians this year.
Rangers Acquire Guzman
Texas further shores up its infielding, acquiring Cristian Guzman from the Washington Nationals in exchange for prospect right-handed pitchers Tanner Roark and Ryan Tatusko. Guzman can play either middle infield position and also a little outfield and will be useful bat to have on bench.
Yankees acquire Kearns
The defending champs have acquired outfielder Austin Kearns from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a player to be named. Kearns (.268, 8 HR, 43 RBI) adds another corner outfielder to the Yankee bench.

Four Years
Today my blog, The Sports Scene, turns four years old. What began in 2006 as a way of relieving boredom during the summertime has turned into so much more. From the great success this blog had on AOL (350 posts, 51000 visitors, #4 ranked blog), to the amount of viewers it has had since I moved to Blogger in March of last year, I would like to thank my readers for coming back. I've been amazed that I've had visitors on Blogger from not only the United States and Canada but also overseas in India, South Korea, and Russia just to name a few. Anyway, once again, thank you to everyone and continue to visit, comment, and email, and look for another great year in superb sports coverage.

Louis Oosthuizen Wins British Open
In a truly dominating performance, little known Louis Oosthuizen ran away with the Claret Jug at the 139th British Open at St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. Oosthuizen, who came into the championship as just the 54th ranked golfer in the world, seized the lead midway through the second round Friday, and never faltered, blowing away the field to win by seven shots, finishing at 16 under par. The 27-year old South African's first major came on the same day as Nelson Mandela's 92nd birthday and moves him up to 15th in the golf rankings.
"To win an Open championship is special," Oosthuizen said. "But to win it at St. Andrews ... it's something you dream about."
Oosthuizen's closest competitor ended up being Lee Westwood, who finished second at a major for the second time this year, with the first being at the Masters. But the final result was never really in doubt on Sunday, as Oosthuizen matched his playing partner Paul Casey shot for shot as Casey trailed by four coming into the final round. However, when Oosthuizen knocked in a 50-foot eagle at #8, and Casey triple bogeyed #12, Oosthuizen held an 8 shot lead with 6 holes to go.
"Nobody was going to stop him," said Casey. "He didn't miss a shot today. I don't know if he missed one all week. That was four days of tremendous golf."

2010 MLB All-Star Game Recap
Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann won MVP honors, driving in all three NL runs with a double in the 7th inning. That was all the offense needed on a night in which the NL pitching starting with Colorado's Ubaldo Jiminez and ending with Los Angeles' Jonathan Broxton held the mighty AL lineup to just 6 hits and 1 run. The only AL-run came courtesy of a sac-fly from the Yankees' Robinson Cano, after the Dodgers' Hong-Chi Kuo threw a grounder down the right field line with no outs in the fifth inning.
In a year of outstanding pitching in baseball, including two (almost three) perfect games and several no-hitters, it was just for the pitchers to dominate the All-Star game.

World Cup Final
All-European final once again, with #2 vs. #4 in the world. Two of the top scorers in this world will be facing each other with Holland's Wesley Sneijder and Spain's David Villa. However, the game will be won in the midfield and in the back. Ultimately, the strength of the Spanish defense in the back with Carles Puyol and Gerald Pique and in the midfield with Xavi and Andres Iniesta will control the pace and possession for much of the game. The Dutch can only hope to also play solid defense, with help from midfielder Mark Van Bommel and hit Spain on a counterattack with Dirk Kuyt providing the service. Although history is against the Spanish, who lost their first game, they are the stronger team and will walk out of Johannesburg with their first World Cup.

LeBron James: Miami Bound
In a decision announced on a one-hour special on ESPN, reigning MVP LeBron James decided to leave his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio and join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami for the upcoming season. Although the terms of the deal are yet to be worked out, LeBron, Bosh, and Wade will work for less than the max-contracts in order to try to win a championship together in South Beach. "I can't say it was always in my plans, because I never thought it was possible," James said. "But the things that the Miami Heat franchise have done, to free up cap space and be able to put themselves in a position this summer to have all three of us, it was hard to turn down."
Well, you have to give it to the guy. He really wants a ring, and no matter how much this move will hurt his legacy on not being able to win a title in his home or without a champion like Wade's help, he put that behind him and made the move. This move does not make the Heat an instant title contender, as they only have four signed players at the moment (the big 3, plus Mario Chalmers), and it will be interesting to see what role players Miami can sign with limited cap space left.
Through all of this, you have to feel for the city of Cleveland, though. With all that city has gone through in terms of sports' heartbreaks from The Drive, The Fumble, The Shot, and more recently losing Cy Young winners CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee, LeBron was all the championship-starved city had along with the horrid Indians and Browns franchises. And now he is gone.

World Cup Semifinals
Uruguay vs. Netherlands 2:30 PM ET ESPN
Gutsy win for Uruguay to beat Ghana in the quarterfinals, and I think Suarez's red card, while did save the game for them will eventually cost them today. The Dutch are coming off huge upset of top-ranked Brazil and Wesley Sneider's team should have enough firepower to take out the last non-European team left.
July 7
Germany vs. Spain 2:30 PM ET ESPN
Well, a rematch of the Euro 2008 final and what a game this looks to be. The youthful Germans disposed of unorganized Argentina 4-0 while Spain edged Paraguay 1-0 in the quarters. David Villa is on fire for the Spanish, who have looked stout defensive throughout the tournament, while the Germans and Miroslav Klose have taken advantage of defensive lapses by opponents to score four goals in consecutive matches. It's a true pick 'em match but I'll go with the Spanish experience in the back and Germany's loss of Thomas Müller as the difference maker.
My Quarterfinal record: 2-2
